Application to Early Childhood Music Therapy

Neurodevelopmental Approach

A neurodevelopmental approach to serving young children with ASD involves not only an understanding of brain differences but also how music therapy applications may provide an opportunity to develop or improve skills. Furthermore, when working in early childhood, it is important to consider how neurodevelopment impacts and informs the intervention. Many neurological approaches, including Neurologic Music Therapy (Thaut & Hoemberg, 2014), are based on a rehabilitative model—separating the domains of cognition, communication, and motor. These domains work well within rehabilitation, as persons with acquired brain injury may demonstrate specific deficits in their motor, speech or cognitive abilities. Young children are building skills for the first time. Although music therapy practitioners may focus on speech, motor, or communication, these skills are not developed in isolation; rather, they are developed concurrently. A deficit in one area will impact other areas. Therefore, young children’s profiles must be considered holistically to determine how music may support or impact targeted areas of need. An understanding of the neurological differences in individuals with ASD, combined with an understanding of how music impacts the brain and overt behaviors, should be used to design protocols that can support young children meet outcomes.
